The easiest way to begin your hobby radio journey is probably to start with Citizens Band Radio or PMR446.
The CB Radio band is on 27MHz, where antennas can be several metres long but signals can travel a long way – potentially, around the world.
PMR446 is on 446MHz where antennas are just centimetres long. It’s an excellent band for local communications but, unlike CB radio, isn’t much use for longer range work.
Whether you’re completely new to radio, a CB user or a Radio Amateur, holding our nets on CB and PMR446 means that everyone can take part. You don’t need a licence for either of these bands and equipment is readily available and reasonably cheap.
That is is why, at Heckington & District Radio Group, we’ve made our home on Channel 23 (UKFM CB) and Channel 3 (PMR446). Apart from the nets, you’ll often find one or more of us monitoring these bands.
But, if you’re not already active on one or other of these bands, how do you get started?
